Artist Statement
Despite a life-long fascination with wood, the time and precision required for furniture making was reminiscent of my former day job. “Measure twice and cut once”, never worked for me. I sought something more, free flowing, organic. In 2002, I found woodturning, something I had never done. It fascinated me. Woodturning encompasses a multitude of functional and decorative forms. Images percolate through my imagination. The result is translated to a tangible work. It is a visual and tactile experience for maker and viewer. Each piece, created over days, weeks or months is an expression of the wood and my internal influences. Size, color, texture, grain orientation and moisture content each call for careful consideration. Hopefully, the visual and tactile creations give you pleasure. I am largely self-taught having begun this journey more than 20 years ago. My goal is to create work that adds a modicum of beauty to the world, whether people are simply browsing or choose to take a piece home with them. The process of creation is fulfilling by itself. Sharing that joy adds to the result.
