Artist Statement

My name is Marsha. I was born in Trinidad and Tobago. When I was seven years old I had an accident that made it hard for me to speak. At school, the other girls would laugh at me when I tried to talk, so I stayed quiet. An art teacher named Miss Mangal kept me close to her. The next year she advised my mom to take me to a special school. At the new school I met Sister Jerome, who got me interested in every kind of art and craft. My first project was a napkin holder made out of clothes pins. I still love making things out of clothes pins, popsicle sticks, and matchsticks. I also love to draw. I am very shy. I love the universe. For me doing art is like visiting a beautiful, peaceful place.
