Artist Statement
My work focuses on the impact of human endeavors. I use metaphor and allusion to reflect on resourcefulness all around us. While artists need to be reasonably compensated, meaningful and excellent art need not be expensive. Printmaking allows me to experiment with imagery while providing unique multiples that can be offered at affordable prices. I make copper plate intaglio and relief prints using wood block, linoleum, and monoprint on paper and other media at Station Street Studios in Brookline Village. Many of my prints start out from painted or drawn studies which become final works on their own. And some of my prints are cut up and used for collage. I received a BFA in Studio Arts majoring in sculpture from Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts and became very interested in scientific illustration while studying for a year in London. I studied comparative healthcare delivery for a MScPH program at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine at the University of London and continue to work in the field. After about 14 years creating illustrations for academic papers, biotech reports and funding pitches, grant applications, and university and hospital development magazines, centered around visually explaining research methods and discoveries, I began to develop a studio arts practice. Supporting local arts organizations is my favorite volunteer activity, having served as a commissioner for the Brookline Commission for the Arts for 6 years, and currently serving as Co-President of the Board for ArtsBrookline as well as Board Treasurer for Brookline Interactive Group, Brookline’s local media organization, along with participating in various ad hoc committees.
